To be congratulated: Emily Chaplin is the winner of the NPower NY "Technology Service Corps" branding competition!
Emily Chaplin's logo and branding concept won the NPower competition.
NPower NY wanted a separate visual branding for their Technology Service Corps initiative, a program that offers young adults technology training and places them in IT positions with non-profit organizations.
Emily's "adopt a student" logo emphasises the individual.
The challege of the project was how to visually set apart the TSC brand, but make it fit with the NPower NY visual identity, which is spread over charter organizations throughout the country. As part of the branding, a separate logo for he "Adopt-a-Student" donor program was needed to motivate people to financially sponsor a student's training tuition.
Emily Chaplin's work used the simplest color scheme of all the submissions, and thematically diverged from the NPower logo, which features the image of a computer. She chose instead to emphasize the human aspect of the TSC program, which, as program manager Christine Stearn said, "really illustrates the purpose of this program. Together the TSC logo and the Adopt-a-Student logo illustrate the team aspect, and the focus on development of the individual."
Congratulations, Emily!

Brent Kaluhikaua
Master's Certificate Student
Brent Kaluhikaua did a great job of branding the TSC identity within the same set of visual symbols as the NPower logo. The client loved the fact that Brent had used a mouse and a satellite tower to illustrate both the tech focus of the organization, and the hierarchy of relationship between the parent organization and the program within it.
Great job, Brent!
The project:Design a brochure for NPower NY's launch of the Tech Service Corps' education funding program.

Sessions.edu Design Competitions are sponsored by leading New York-based companies and organizations. The Spring competition sponsor is NPower New York, member of a national network of nonprofits dedicated to putting technology in the hands of nonprofit organizations.
Below you'll find an introduction to the client, a summary of the design brief, and contest rules.
Visit the NPower NY site to learn more about the organization.
NPower NY is part of a growing network of independent, locally based nonprofits dedicated to putting technology know-how in the hands of nonprofit organizations to expand the reach and impact of their work. A major component of this mission is Technology Service Corps, or TSC, an innovative technology training program focused on giving New York City young adults an entrance to a technology career, while simultaneously providing affordable and trained technology staff to nonprofit organizations.
Up until now, TSC has not really had a logo or branding of its own. It has existed as a segment of the Npower NY site but didnt really draw attention as a standout program of NPower. Now, after nine cycles of this highly successful training program, TSC is rolling out an Adopt-a-Student program wherein an individual donor can sponsor the TSC training of a talented, motivated student.
Logo Design for TSC with branding of "Adopt-a-Student." This project begins with a logo design for TSC, which will take design cues from the NPower NY logo but also have its own independent look. The two should look compatible on a page together, but the TSC logo shouldn't look like it borrowed its entire idenity from the NPower NY logo. Once the logo design is done, additional visual branding should be done for the Adopt-a-Student program. This program goes under the umbrella of TSC so while Adopt-a-Student is a heavily featured part of TSC, it should fit in with the TSC identity. Competitors have the option to submit up to three versions of the logo designs; client and faculty will select the best one for finalists to use on the next phase of the project.
Brochure Design for the TCS "Adopt-a-Student" launch: This glossy two-color brochure mailer will be image-heavy and lively, providing an overview of TSC and visually getting across the impact TSC makes on the lives of its students and the nonprofit organizations that TSC graduates go on to serve. The Adopt-a-Student program will be covered in detail in a segment of the TSC brochure.
Translation of Visual Assets to Web Template. Adopt-A-Student donors will receive html emails containing visually rich, in-depth information on the student they sponsor as well as regular updates on the progress of his or her training. Once the winner has completed the brochure design, he or she will take the visual elements of the brochure and create web-ready versions for the html templates.
File formats: As usual, all your work should be submitted in jpeg format for judging, but save all your original eps files in case your work is chosen as the winning piece. I can't stress the importance of this enough: save your originals!
All participating students must complete the NPower Competition Sign-Up form within the Competition folder in the Student Center. Upon doing so, we will enter you into a "class" within Angel where you can download the images and copy. There you will also view more detailed competition information and submission instructions.
Submit up to three TSC logo designs with branding of "Adopt-a-Student" by Friday May 27, 2005.
Each participant has the opportunity to submit 3 versions of their initial logo designs. Client will indicate which one to use for the next phase of the project. Semi-finalists will have an opportunity to revise and improve their designs with Faculty feedback, and go on to do the brochure design. We will be reviewing final submissions along with NPower NY, who will be selecting the winner. If your design is selected by NPower NY, we may give you some notes for minor tweaks and revisions, and you may also be given feedback directly with the client, after which point you must submit a version of the design with finalized copy as provided by NPower NY.
At the judges' discretion, competition submissions that arrive late may not be included. By participating in this competition, you hereby release all rights to the final product to NPower NY. Every design submitted becomes the exclusive property of NPower NY. By submitting a design, the designer thereby grants NPower NY perpetual license to use the design on its press release, advertising, and any other way it sees fit, anywhere in the world.
Examples of outstanding student work may also be displayed or publicized at Sessions.edu site or in the Sessions.edu catalogue.
