Certificate Student Profile: Web Design

Architect/engineer Anita Riedner needed an education as mobile as her army husband. And so she decided to develop her skills in a Web design certificate program.

1. What motivated you to pursue a certificate program in design?

Image of Student Work Ironically, the great recession motivated me to enroll in a program. Since finding a job as an architect/structural engineer was close to impossible over the last year, I decided not to lose any time and improve my skills in something that I love as much as I love architecture… graphic and Web design. Taking a program has allowed me to show my thoughtful, creative, and artistic sides.

2. Why did you choose an online program at Sessions College?

As a former army wife, I was forced to travel a lot and the online program seemed to be the only option. During the program I changed locations five times!

3. What's the most fun about studying Web design?

The variety of themes and projects and constant development of my skills. It was fun to apply my visions and a little of myself into my work. I enjoy watching what they become with every day along with the newly acquired knowledge.

4. How did you manage program deadlines alongside work, family, and other commitments?

I am very self-disciplined, which is necessary when studying online. When I was preparing for my wedding in July 2010, I postponed my job search and focused solely on my program. I think it was a good decision, because I was able to make the most of the program.

5. What's the biggest difference you've seen in your work so far?

I feel like I am able to put all my thoughts into the graphic design aspect of Web design. I am able to design almost everything I want and provide a high quality and interesting Web site for my new customers.

6. Goals after graduation:

Finding a big, fat, and colorful job, preferably on the hammock in Jamaica.
