Tiling Textures

Inside Scoop on: Creating Seamless textures for Game Environments

Sessions instructor Todd Gantzler
Release date: January 4, 2007

Why I built this course:
"One universal principle to remember is that all game art should be a pleasure to look at! In my courses, you'll learn how to make tiling textures and texture sets that make a game level look amazing. Believe it or not, making games can be even more fun than playing them."

The Developer: 3D artist Todd Gantzler has taken his game art experience around the world. He's taught game development in New Zealand and England, and has also worked in graphics and animation for TV and film. He's worked and taught in the industry since 2000, and has even written the book on game art (Game Development Essentials: Video Game Art). His love of game textures is evident throughout his course, and he shares loads of tried-and-true tips with students.

The Course: Just about every game you see has a 3D environment covered in repeated patterns known as tiling textures. Dirt, bricks, wood, grass... it all tiles seamlessly, but takes some work to get that way. This course covers a wide range of Photoshop techniques that enable students to alter photographs to achieve attractive tiling 2D patterns. Organic and geometric textures are covered, as are ways to create texture variations for complete texture sets. Perspective, lighting, and other types of maps used by game artists are introduced, and students will learn to test their 2D textures on 3D environments in Maya.

Who Should Take It: Students with experience in 2D and 3D art who are interested in game texturing are encouraged to take this course. Texture artists are important in the game creation process, and the ability to create tiling textures is essential to this role. Texture art is a fun way to combine 2D imaging with 3D game scenes.

Cool Factor: Turning a picture you've taken yourself into a repeating pattern in a 3D environment is fun for any game artist—it's like taking a piece of your real life and bringing it into a virtual game world.

Course Projects: Source imaging, basic texture tile, geometric pattern tiles, basic texture set, advanced texture set, complete textured scene.
