Malik Perry

Profile of Graphic Design degree student Malik Perry

After traveling the world with an international non-profit, Malik Perry moved from Washington, DC to the Pacific Northwest and decided to continue a personal dream interrupted: completing his art school education. An avid artist who has designed logos and publicity for foundations, Malik's first go at art school was cut short by the events of September 11, 2001 and a successful battle with stage four cancer. By entering the Associate of Occupational Studies in Graphic Design program in September 2010, Malik plans to combine his love of design with a future career in medical illustration or forensic art.

What motivated you to pursue a design degree?

I have always had images and pictures in my head and as a child I learned that I have talent in the visual arts. As I got older and realized that I could make money with my talent I began my quest to pursue a career in design and a degree is the first step.

Why did you choose to earn your degree online at Sessions College?

I researched several design/art schools and I also took courses at The Art Institute of Washington, DC. As my wife and I have had to move several times over the last three years due to her job I needed to find an online school that could meet my needs. I wasn't impressed by any community schools, colleges, and other online programs in my research, and when I came across Sessions College I was very impressed by the samples of the student work that was displayed as well as the flexibility of the school without compromising quality in learning and work expectation.

Illustration seems to be your main passion. What attracts you to it and how do you see integrating illustration with your digital design work?

I have always felt like I was good at drawing and have been drawing since I was little. I think as far as integrating illustration with digital design when I am creating images digitally I am able to create images more easily and come up with ideas for images.

How do you manage degree program deadlines alongside your work, family, and other commitments?

I have had to be diligent in creating a schedule for myself as I am a full-time student while my wife works outside of the home. We have two puppies so I try and keep my schedule consistent during the day. I also try and complete assignments on time or early and over the weekend I get a head start on the coming week's assignments so I won't fall behind.

What is the biggest difference you've seen in your work so far?

As far as my illustrations I think that I have improved in my technique in drawing. I have learned to use new tools such as charcoal and am having fun creating. I am also finding that I am forced to produce work more quickly due to the assignment deadlines, so I am developing my skill in producing quality work within a time frame. I am also able to develop my skill as I have more time to devote to learning and practicing, which I did not have previously.

Describe your goal on graduating from the program.

My plan is to freelance and hopefully get some contracts before I graduate. I would love to go into medical illustration to combine my love of anatomy, the medical field, and design. I also hope to have my own design company in the future.
