Texas native Megan Skipworth is a teacher and curriculum designer who found herself inexorably drawn into the world of art and design in the process of teaching students about it. A school district curriculum project led to a summer studying layout, design, and visual storytelling and soon Megan was designing wedding invitations and searching for a way to develop her design skill and turn her hobby into a possible career. Megan entered the Associate of Occupational Studies in Graphic Design program in May 2010.
What motivated you to pursue a design degree? Being able to take my interests in art and design further is a dream for me. I suppose it's an occupational hazard of being a teacher, but I'm a strong believer in the fundamentals. So in order to push myself and immerse myself in design, a degree always seemed like an important first step.
There have definitely been times when I've found it difficult to manage work, school, and family. But just like I tell my students, organization, planning, and prioritizing are keys. The predictable schedule of Sessions classes is a big help—I always know what to expect.
What mostly attracted me to Sessions College is the faculty. The teachers are knowledgeable, working professionals. It seemed like the perfect place to learn from people who are working in the field today.
I was a bit wary at first of an online program. I worried that I would get lost, or I wouldn't get any feedback on my work. But participating in online discussions and critiques with other students has eased my fears in this area. Getting feedback and seeing other students' work is almost better online than in person. Responses and discussions are thoughtful, and I've learned a lot from the other students in the program.
This is such a difficult question! I've learned so much in just a few weeks, it's hard to describe. My technical and computer skills, especially with Photoshop, have grown by leaps and bounds. I feel like my work has become more purposeful and thoughtful, and overall more organized and appealing.
Ultimately, my goal is to be able to work full time in the field of design. One of the best experiences I can think of is being able to produce something that is exactly the way I imagined it. And when other people can appreciate it too, that just makes it all the better.
