Introduction

This lecture introduces students to the heart of Flash, animation!

Welcome to the wild and wonderful world of Flash! Unless you're part of the 1% of Web users who use "text-only" Web browsers, you've seen Flash used in some form or fashion in many places around the Web. From wicked animation to advanced interactivity to fully interactive rich Internet applications, Flash is the choice for creating interactive multimedia and animation for the Web. – David Witt, Sessions instructor.

When you think of Flash, you think of interactivity and animation. Most major sites use Flash, with good reason. Flash is easily the best and most widely used tool for creating animations on the Web. And if you are a web designer, there’s no doubt that knowing how to use Flash increases your marketability.

When you create an animation in Flash, you tween an object. Tweening describes the creation of a series of incremental changes to an image, rather like a flip book animation.  What makes Flash so powerful is that you don’t have to create each one of these steps, Flash does that for you. It’s relatively easy to animate objects with Flash, but there are a few tricks to it. One is how to avoid sloppy shape tweens. If you know a little about Flash, you know that shape tweens are unpredictable. They aren’t used very often, but if you know what you are doing, you can create fascinating animation effects.
