Judging only from the online swatch I've seen, I think the closest web-safe colors would be #330099 (more blue) and #330066 (more purple). Maybe even #000066?

http://colorfilter.wickline.org/ is a great color-blindness filter.

At first blush, I see a warm blue rather than a purple. That suggests its complement will be a cool orange - somewhere in the colours of weathered ochres, or when diluted, iron-rich sands.

There are many tools for picking harmonious colour schemes; almost any colour wheel that includes a good spread of brights, pastels and shades is useful.

Further to Eli's comment: what is the nearest web-safe colour to Pantone's "Blue Iris"?

One other thing: it would be nice to know how a given colour, or more especially, colour scheme, is seen by those people who suffer from the commoner forms of colour-blindness. For example, a scheme opposing reds and greens of similar tone almost completely lacks contrast for those unable to distinguish red from green; it may be unreadable or meaningless. Sometime during the last year, I've seen a website that offers simulations of colour schemes as colour-blind people see them; but I've lost the bookmark ...

Purples are definitely a rarity in web design... I'm curious if purples become trendy in other areas, will they make their way to more sites?

This is last year's Chili Pepper: http://www.pantone.com/pages/pantone/pantone.aspx?pg=20365&ca=10

That is rather a nice color, but I'm not sure it's the best for web designs, well, I haven't seen many sites using that particular color :)

Could you direct me to a link with last year's color of the year?
