Strangely enough, banners are still a nice extra boost to many sites' revenue, though most sites now know that they can't be the sole revenue source. They are especially useful on very audience-specific sites like blogs and forums like crafter.org. They're still used on more general, large-scale sites as well (like myspace.com and cnn.com), but clickthrough rates on these tend to be microscopic.
