JAMES DODSON
SketchUp Trainer

SketchUp course instructor James Dodson is an architect with 10 years of experience at the norwegian firm Snøhetta (the internationally acclaimed designers of the Alexandria Library in Egypt, JMW Turner Gallery in Margate, England, and the WTC Memorial Complex in NYC).

James has extensive expertise in the use of 3D modeling as a design tool. For Spring 2006 he has been appointed as visiting lecturer at the University of Texas School of Architecture where he will be teaching an advanced design studio and a seminar course entitled "Explorations in Digital Design Process." SketchUp will form an important part of the course that will seek to define a new digital workflow for architects and designers. James has been developing and teaching courses at Sessions since 2000.

SketchUp Intermediate
Get the most out of SketchUp, the 3D modeling program from @Last Software

If you're an architect, builder, planner, interior designer, or game artist using SketchUp, you'll want to get the most out of this powerful application.

In this 3-lesson course, you'll build on the skills for creating 3D objects developed in SketchUp Basics and learn how to use groups and components, tap the potential of inferences, interconnect forms, create lathed and extruded objects, and more.

To impress your clients and colleagues, you'll learn how to add entourage elements, incorporate photos, create different model views, and even animate a TourGuide presentation.

Sessions 3D expert Jim Dodson has teamed up with Google to create this SketchUp series (Basics and Intermediate) with step-by-step instructions and creative hands-on projects. Drawing in 3D has always been exciting, but never this easy.

Prerequisites:
To take this course, you'll need:
Computer with Internet connection (28.8 Kbs modem or faster).
Google SketchUp 4.0 or higher

Students can expect to learn how to:
Isolate geometry by using groups and components.
Create, edit, scale and store components and nest them for efficiency.
Use and swap placeholders for complex components.
Add entourage components to enhance the realism of a model .
Identify and use different kinds of inferences.
Connect forms using inferences and the Pencil tool.
Incorporate photos into a model and create Page views
Create an animated TourGuide presentation of your model.
Create rounded and lathed objects with the Follow-Me tool.
Created complex intersecting or extruded shapes with the Intersect with Model command.
Outline:

LESSON 1 Groups and Components Lesson One explores how to use SketchUp's sticky geometry to develop a fluid approach to 3D modeling. You'll learn how groups and components can be used to isolate or combine different parts of your model, allowing you to push and pull around 3D objects and join them to morph your designs. A secondary focus is the use of components to create efficient models. To create repeated shapes, you needn't reinvent the wheel (or the arch)—you can nest or scale components, storing them in component libraries to speed your workflow. In the project, you'll create an arched structure using components and explore adding SketchUp's entourage components to give it realism.

LESSON 2 Creating Forms with Inferences Complex shapes are often created in 3D models by the intersection of objects. In Lesson Two, you'll explore how to use SketchUp's geometry engine and inferences to create complex forms simply and easily. The lesson begins by examining how the SketchUp inference engine communicates inference options while you're drawing in 3D. Creating an L-shaped building, you'll explore how both inferences and inference locks work. You'll also learn how to interconnect forms using the Pencil (line) tool, draw parallel inferences, draw on sloping surfaces, and cut holes in shapes. In the project, you'll test your skills by creating a detailed model of a house (your own?) and setting up a TourGuide presentation.

LESSON 3 Creating Complex Forms Lesson Three explores some techniques to add yet more complexity to your work. You'll learn how the Follow-Me tool is used to create rounded and lathed shapes. Then you'll discover how to extrude one shape from another using the Intersect with Model command. Combining these techniques gives you the flexibility to create nearly any shape you dream up. In the final project, you'll create a detailed house or other object that showcases all your SketchUp skills.
