Foundation's Competition Winner |

|

|
To be congratulated: Samuel
Fisher of England is the winner of the Cambodian
Arts and Scholarship Foundation competition!
Marking our first foray into a full site
redesign competition, the project was to reorganize
and redesign the Web site of the Cambodian Art and
Scholarship Foundation, which had, up until now,
been designed and webmastered by Jonah Rosenfeld,
an officer of the foundation.
"Our site was just a product of me teaching
myself basic html as quickly as I could-- as you
can see, it is really just thrown together and doesn't
meet our needs," said Jonah. "We absolutely
needed a real designer to step in, and we're just
beyond fortunate that we were chosen as a client
for this competition."

One: The Logo |
|
 |
Sam started
with a logo redesign. |
"I felt that the butterfly was
a good symbol of hope, representative
of the struggle of young Cambodians
the foundation is trying to help,
" Sam said of his approach to
the logo. "Also, I felt a butterfly
would reproduce well graphically."
Initially, the client felt that the
bird would be a better logo than the
butterfly, since Frederick Lipp had
started the foundation based on the
proceeds of his book.
Sam did a version of the logo with
the finch instead of the butterfly,
but he argued strongly in favor of
the original butterfly design, and
the client was won over by how clearly
the butterfly worked even in black
and white. "I had to admit,"
said Jonah,"Sam was right that
the butterfly reproduced better graphically--
the finch didn't look as good and
we were swayed not to stick so literally
to our original idea."

Two: The Site Navigation |
|
 |
 |
| Sam
submitted a site navigation plan
that showed he was aware of the
heirarchy of importance of the
information on the site. |
"Basically, the site needs
to attract donors, and it needs
to attract volunteers. I wanted
to emphasize more the news updates
and the important work being done
by CASF, and make that information
easier to reach on the site,"
says Sam. "They had a ton
of great images that I used to
make sure site visitors were getting
an up-to-the-minute sense of what
CASF is accomplishing."

Three: The Homepage |
 |
|
|

So many great homepage designs were submitted, but
Sam's was chosen as the winner because, as Jonah Rosenfeld
says, "it really did the best job of capturing
what CASF is about." As for Sam Fisher, he was
very pleased to be chosen. As he puts it, "because
of this competition, I was able to get involved in such
an important, beneficial mission." |

CASF was extremely impressed with the work of runners
up Jennifer Worski and Mark Shiel. "Their pages
were both really inviting," said the client."Mark
Shiel's was really warm and earthy, and Jennifer Worski's
was so sleek and modern. Totally contrasting approaches
that both look great." Congrats to both runners-up!
You are clearly ones-to-watch in future competitions.
