To be congratulated: Mark Logan, Graphic+Web Design Masters Certificate graduate and current Business Marketing Certificate student, is the winner of the DETC competition!

The homepage and internal page design for Mark Logan's winning DETC site redesign.

The Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) is the global leader in distance learning accreditation. The challenge for this competition was to redesign their five-year-old Web site with a look that reflected their DETC's growing reputation and audience. DETC Executive Director Mike Lambert's objective was to present the global outlook of the organization through the site redesign, placing visual emphasis on interdisciplinary student achievements and using technology to make information more accessible to students and institutions. The site also had the dual task of showcasing the DETC’s illustrious history while reflecting its modern outlook.

"The outcome of this unique student competition epitomizes success for us: a student from one of our accredited schools using the skills he has learned there to redesign and refurbish the DETC’s online image," said Mr. Lambert. "Everyone benefits."

Mark Logan's work was among several very strong finalists. He submitted a site that visually put the focus on the achievements and needs of DETC students, while at the same time enhancing the organization and usability of the site. As an adult learner, Mark juggled the demands of a full time job, his online studies, and the challenge of a competition.  "In spite of my concerns of the demands on my schedule from entering this competition, I had a great time," he said. "I worked hard, made sure to pay attention to every detail, and researched competitors’ work to know what I was up against. This project has enhanced my position as a professional Web designer with my current employer." Before launching this site, Mark will be going the extra mile and making the site fully accessible to vision-impaired surfers, further distinguishing this addition to his portfolio. Great job, Mark!

RUNNERS- UP :
Kevin Barr's page designs, homepage and internal (left and bottom) introduced a colorscheme and type revision the client loved.

Kevin Barr
Web Design + Multimedia Masters Certificate Student

Kevin Barr's confident redesign was a close second, featuring a nice easy-to-read homepage design with visual emphasis placed on the students and their achievements. The DETC site pages offer a lot of information to digest, and his layout gave the pages a light, open look. It is important that visitors to the site be able to access a lot of information at once, so this was crucial to the redesign.

Alison Cairns 's page redesigns, homepage and internal page (top and bottom)updated but still stayed consistent with DETC's original design.

Alison Cairns' submissions impressed the client with robust technical skills and an update that kept a lot of the successful elements of the previous design. In a site redesign it is important not to alienate the base of viewers accustomed to the current site functionality, and the DETC appreciated her adherence to that principle.
