To be congratulated: Gorana Urlic, runner-up of the City Project competition, is the winner of the FlowerPower NYC competition!

Gorana Urlic's winning FlowerPower homepage design.

An outstanding student, Gorana Urlic showed tremendous potential when she competed in the City Project competition and placed as a finalist. It was clear she had a natural sense of color and layout, and that she wasn't afraid to put new skills to the test. Now, fresh from her Web Design course, she decided to take a crack at the design of the FlowerPower Web site and came out on top.

FlowerPower, an organization that collects flowers from major events around New York City and Los Angeles, makes bouquets and gives them the sick, elderly, or dying. The site needed to capture the interest of people in major cities hosting the most lavish weddings and gala affairs, or, as founder Nancy Taylor put it, "woo the Chanel-wearing crowd." Gorana heard this and determined that the project was right up her aesthetic alley.

In the first iteration of Gorana's design, she got rid of the bright pink sunflower of the old FlowerPower identity and used a flower called the Columbine, which, she says, she chose for its "surreal beauty and quiet power." It gave the whole page a more serious look, and served to highlight the action steps but it was somehow too cold to evoke the reaction FlowerPower wanted from its viewers; it lacked the element of human warmth. Gorana upped the warmth factor by adding a rosy hue and images that linked to the gallery pages. Without overpowering the text, the images highlight the festivity, elicit empathy, and illustrate the service that FlowerPower provides.

Paromita's work impressed the client with the robustness of her design, her bold color choices, and the look of activity she created on the site. "I really loved how this design made it look like there was a lot going on at FlowerPower!" She turned in several distinct variations, showing she can easily reconceive and build upon her ideas, a skill that will benefit her in the design industry. Great work, Paromita!
