Design Competition

The project: Design a brochure for a non-profit organization

Tuesday's Children Brochure
Competition was closed on August 22, 2003.

Sessions Competitions are sponsored by leading New York-based companies and organizations. The Fall competition sponsor is Tuesday's Children, a non-profit family service organization dedicated to serving the needs of children who lost a parent on September 11.

Competition winners gain a portfolio piece second to none: the chance to design a professionally-produced print or Web project that is used by a leading company or organization.
Runners-up have their work featured in our online design competition gallery.
Contestants' work are initially judged by a panel of Sessions Faculty members. Finalists will be given one round of critique, then work will be submitted to the client for final selection.
Competition deadline is August 22, 2003. To enter, you must be a Certificate student. Enter your email address in the competition to receive a full design brief, company logo, brochure text, color and font specifications, and approved images.

About The Client

Tuesday's Children, a non-profit family service organization founded by family and friends of 9/11 victims, has made a long-term commitment dedicated to the needs of every child who lost a parent on 9/11.

Working as a team with recognized leaders in the fields of child development, family advocacy, crisis counseling and mentoring initiatives, Tuesday's Children has developed an innovative platform of programs based on family community interaction which focus on the realization of full potential today and tomorrow.

Tuesday's Children's progams include:

• Children's Mentoring.
• Special Event Resources.
• Family Support Network.
• Creative Insight.
• Internships and Apprentice Program.
• Giant Steps.

About The Project

For reference, here are the guidelines that were provided to participants:

Competition entrants will be designing an eight-page brochure that will play a key role in Tuesday's Children's press kit. The brochure will be broadly directed to potential partners, parents, educators, and other contributors. The brochure will give a visual overview of the company and its goals.

Size: The brochure will need to fit in an 8.5" x 12" press kit folder. It could also be prepared for self-mailing.

Colors/Fonts: Because of the nature of this non-profit organization and the companies it will be approaching for partnership, the brochure should be fairly conservative, and largely in keeping with the look and feel of the organization's Web site, www.tuesdayschildren.org. To that end, we will provide to all contestants a list of approved color specs and fonts.

Logo: To the right you can see a .gif version of the logo. We will provide to all contestants an EPS version of the logo for you to work with on your print design.

Images: The Tuesday's Children Web site is rich with photographic images that dramatize their mission on a human level. Though this brochure should be fairly conservative, it should in no way be dry. To that end, we will provide to all contestants a sampling of photos used on the Web site, from which you can choose elements to include in your brochure design.

Please note that because the organization and brochure is focused on helping 9/11 survivors build a successful future, all supplied images will be family-related. Realistic or emotive images of 9/11 itself are not appropriate for this print brochure.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:

The competition will follow very strict rules. For reference, here are the rules that were provided to participants:

All participating students must enter their email address in the form on this page to confirm their entry. Upon doing so, we will send you a zip file containing the images and logo files mentioned above, as well as the copy for the brochure.

Submit initial design by August 22

While you may use Photoshop for part of the project, all your actual brochure design work must be done in a print production tool: Illustrator, Quark, InDesign, or Freehand. You may import images from Photoshop into one of those tools, but for printing and reproduction reasons do not do any final work in Photoshop.

You must save your work in eps format at all times, but your initial submission for the August 22 due date will be a .jpg version, showing both front and back of every page in the brochure if you choose to do a stapled brochure, and front and back of the entire foldout if you choose to do an accordion-fold brochure. Finalists will be chosen, and then feedback will be given to those students.

Finalists will have an opportunity to revise and improve their designs with Faculty feedback. We will be reviewing final submissions along with Tuesday's Children, who will be selecting the winner. If your design is selected by Tuesday's Children, we may give you some notes for minor tweaks and revisions, after which point you must submit the brochure design in eps format, with fonts included, ready for printing.

COMPETITION RULES:

At the judges' discretion, competition submissions that arrive late may not be included. By participating in this competition, you hereby release all rights to the final product to Tuesday's Children. Every design submitted becomes the exclusive property of Tuesday's Children. By submitting a design, the designer thereby grants Tuesday's Children perpetual license to use the design on its press release, advertising, and any other way it sees fit, anywhere in the world.

Examples of outstanding student work may also be displayed or publicized at Sessions site or in the Sessions catalogue.
