Competitors were asked to design an eight-page
brochure featuring the logo, colors, and style
of imagery associated with the Tuesday's Children
website. Upon registering for the competition,
students received a package font and color specs,
copy, logo, and ten high-resolution images provided
by the client. Then it was up to each student
to take the project in his or her own direction.

"I
wish I could have three brochures made instead
of one!"

With so many excellent competitors, we did not
have an easy time narrowing it down. A panel of
faculty at Sessions selected five finalists,
whose work was viewed by Chris Burke, President,
and his team at Tuesdsay's Children. Each of the
finalists' pieces possessed some notable quality:
Rick Craft had done exquisite treatment to the
photo images; Thai Dang had a beautifully flowing
accordion-fold presentation, and Jason Greeley's
work stood out for its use of whitespace. "I
wish I could have three brochures made instead
of one!" Chris lamented.
Chris requested some changes from a few of the
finalists, knowing he'd have to choose the winner
upon receiving the revisions-- the final artwork
had to be at the printer on Monday September 8!
Running on adrenaline, the finalists turned in
their revisions in record time. The work was excellent
from all finalists, but once revisions were submitted,
the winner became clear: "Jason's pages had
this clean, airy look, so simple and yet really
powerful with the images right across the center
of the pages," says Chris. We happily announced
the news to Jason that he had won the competition.
"Words can not describe how happy I am to
hear this," was Jason's thrilled reaction.
"I was confident in my design but it's a
matter of taste and I wasn't sure if my design
was what they were looking for."

"Words
can not describe how happy I am to hear
this,"
Jason Greeley, Competition
Winner |

Once he had been named as the winner, the real
sprinting began. Tuesday's Children came back
with last-minute text changes as well as some
fine-tuning requests for the cover, which was
turning out to be the trickiest page to get right.
"I wanted the cover to have an image that
was positive," says Chris, "but with
emotional impact. None of the images we tried
seemed quite right." There was also the matter
of integrating the logo, the slogan, and several
lines of copy. On the final weekend before turning
the work into the printer, Chris and Jason barely
left their computers, emailing back and forth
with different solutions. "It was crazy,"
says Chris. "I'd make some comments, Jason
would quickly do the artwork, I'd suggest something
else, he'd turn it around right away. Jason's
in Denmark, I'm in New York, so with the time
difference we were really working against the
clock in every way!"
"I
felt the whole revisions process went really well,"
says Jason. "Chris knew what he wanted, but
at the same time he was open to the suggestions
I had concerning the design." In the end,
they crafted an ideal cover, a composite of three
images, with simplified text. Chris originally
suggested Jason do a composite of four images,
"but Jason knew that wasn't right. He came
back to me and said "I've done it with three,
and I think it works better. Well, I looked at
the way the three images fit with "Here Today.
Here Tomorrow. Here To Stay," and sure enough,
it was just perfect."
Imagine how proud we were at Sesssions.edu when
the printer sent us gorgeous full-color proofs
of Jason's work. The people at Tuesday's Children
certainly shared our enthusiasm. "I am completely
blown away!" was the reaction from Chris
Burke when he got the proofs. "I knew that
the work would be good, but this exceeds my expectations
in every way. Working with Jason has been a great
experience, and I love the teamwork that went
into this project." Jason did more than win
a competition; he contributed to a valuable organization,
he got real-world experience under his belt, and
according to Chris Burke, he's found himself a
returning client. Chris tells us, "I can
definitely see working with Jason Greeley on many
future projects." Says Jason, "The knowledge
and experience you gain from a project like this
is priceless." Sessions extends our heartiest
congratulations to all competition participants,
the finalists, Tuesday's Children, and to Jason
Greeley—bravo, Jason!
