Finding an Affordable Art School: What Federal Higher Education Data Tells Us
Through its innovative, fully online, asynchronous model, Sessions College utilizes modern digital delivery to offer accredited design and media degrees at a fraction of the cost of more traditional institutions, making creative careers accessible without overwhelming student loan debt.
How Much Does Art School Cost?
Figuring out the true cost of earning a degree can be challenging; financial aid is confusing, scholarships can create differences between tuition and what a student pays, and hidden fees and living expenses can make college expenses add up—which is why the federal College Affordability and Transparency Center was created in 2011. The College Affordability center is a website focused on tracking which colleges offer the highest or and lowest tuition per academic year.
According to the latest data, updated July 1st 2026, annual tuition and fees at prominent art colleges can range from $26,000 to over $56,000. In the same report, Sessions College is ranked as among the most affordable in its category, with annual tuition and fees of just $7, 400. (The data is based on publicly listed tuition and fees per academic year for 2024-25.)

Founded in 1997, Sessions College has been making a high quality, accredited art, design, and digital media education significantly more accessible than traditional private art colleges for more than 25 years. Since the College Affordability center was founded, Sessions College has regularly ranked in the top 10 each year in its category for lowest tuition and fees.
As the federal data illustrates, the cost of college at Sessions College can be many times more affordable than traditional art school competitors. As we enter the 2026-27 year, many schools have updated their tuition, but Sessions College remains 50% more affordable than competitors. (See comparable tuition for 2026-27 year.)
Why is Sessions College More Affordable?
It’s no secret that most traditional colleges are weighed down by the immense physical overhead costs of providing students a full-service campus experience, including campus housing, dining facilities, sports stadiums, physical libraries, and air-conditioned classrooms.
Founded in 1997 as a wholly online institution, Sessions College skips out on these campus-related expenses entirely. With its mission to provide project-based, industry relevant, and affordable online education, is able to pass its operational savings directly to students through competitive per-credit rates and zero hidden fees.
Just consider the factors that make Sessions College affordable:
- Lower tuition. Our tuition is 50% lower than the average annual cost of tuition at 4-year colleges in the United States, and significantly lower than our competitors.
- Guaranteed tuition. Once you are enrolled, your tuition is locked in for your program. It does not increase from year to year, provided you remain enrolled.
- No hidden mystery fees. Other colleges charge hefty additional fees per semester (or technology, lab, library, parking!). At Sessions, your costs are simple and transparent.
- Flexible online classes. No commute or loss of income. Many of our students are working full or part time.
- No textbook/materials costs. With digital delivery, there are no textbooks. Students will need access to Adobe Creative Cloud and basic art supplies depending on program. (See technology requirements.)
While traditional art schools charge premium prices that put students into a position of high debt, the leadership at Sessions College operates on a different philosophy: professional, high-quality creative training should expand access, not create financial barriers.
The school’s model is designed to strip away the costs of higher education that do not directly contribute to a student’s portfolio or career readiness.
As Sessions President Gordon Drummond explains: “Our mission has always been focused on the needs of the aspiring creative professional. By making sure our programs are affordable, we enable students from all walks of life to explore their potential without undue financial risk.”
A Return on Investment
Creative students (and their parents) often face a tough conversation when considering going to school: Will an art or design degree offer a return on investment that justifies the expense?
To find the answer, we did the math using the latest federal data from the College Affordability and Transparency Center and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS.gov).
According to the College Affordability center, earning a bachelor’s degree at a traditional art school can cost an average of $43,598 annually. By contrast, the total current program cost for the entire Sessions College Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Graphic Design program is $48,200.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the current national median graphic designer salary of $61,300. That means a creative graduate typically cannot afford to rack up tens of thousands of dollars of debt. With its extremely competitive per-credit tuition of $400/credit, Sessions College makes it possible for students who are partly or fully eligible for federal Pell grants to fund their education without incurring excessive loan debt.
Driving Value For Creative Students
Of course, any student’s choice of college or educational program should not be purely based on cost; it should be about selecting the best program to achieve your creative or career goals. Being a 100% online institution doesn’t mean compromising on standards.
Here are some reasons students choose Sessions:
