Web Usability Training
Interface Design
Web Interfaces
are crucial to the success of your design |
| |
|

| Chris Mack
from Oregon and Jennifer Worski
from Florida decided to illustrate their concepts
for a GPS/CD/Radio interface. |
|
Interfaces are crucial to the success of your design in
essence, they link your audience to your material. Good web interface design
is intuitive, easy to navigate, user-friendly, and built on past
user experience (on-line and off). Bad interfaces turn away visitors
like the plague.
On a VCR, you know the red circle means "record" and the green
triangle means "play", right? The internet has similar conventions,
some well-established, some still experimental.
In Interface Design, you'll learn the thought processes and theories
behind these man-and-machine interfaces, and, more importantly,
how to apply the many graphic design tools at your disposal to gently
guide visitors around your own site.

Outline: |
| |
| LESSON 1 History and Fundamentals
The first lesson of this course examines web interface design throughout
history. We'll look at precursors to the mouse and video screens,
as well as the history of GUIs (Graphical User Interfaces
icons and the like) and ideas behind online interface buttons. |
| |
| LESSON 2 Mapping and Hierarchy
In the second lesson of the course, we'll focus on important concepts
in map design, color and visualization, dynamic mapping, orientation
and navigation, and interface foundationization. We'll also cover
the design principles of web browsers, and some important considerations
to make when designing your information space. |
| |
| LESSON 3 Interface Designers
and Users Our last lesson looks at the all-important role
of the user in your design. We'll address ways to conceptually apply
the principles behind navigation aid design and graphic design techniques
to your work. Then you're done, and before you know it, your sites
will be more user-friendly, more organized, and more successful. |
