Profile of Web Design degree student Justin Ashley

Montana native Justin Ashley was attracted to the field of Web design by its intricate technical challenges. Though he didn't consider himself an artist in high school, he's discovering the joy of seeing ideas in his head spring to life on a computer screen. Justin's long-term goals include a portable career and making a difference in his community. Justin enrolled in the Associate of Occupational Studies in Web Design program in May 2010.

What motivated you to pursue a design degree?

I had never considered a degree in design before, because I felt I wasn't artistic. In high school, I was always good in the sciences. I was working at a tire shop when a friend showed me his Web design work. Something tugged at my heart, and I was fascinated by the process it took to design a Web site. When I found out Web design involved a lot of challenging technical work along with designing, I decided to give it a try.

Why did you choose to earn your degree online at Sessions College?

I wanted a program that was flexible, affordable, and demonstrates the ability to produce professionals in the field. I needed a school that would let me work full-time and do my studies at night. I found Sessions College to meet these needs so I can reach my goal—being a professional designer who can work anywhere in the United States.

What is the most fun about studying Web Design?

I really enjoy the freedom I've found in being able to express myself in a way I never thought possible. I have tremendous joy in taking a design in my head and seeing it come to life on the screen.

How do you manage program deadlines alongside work, family, and other commitments?

This is tough at times, but I found having a level of discipline helps. I have to manage my time to keep up with everything. Usually, I will read my school lectures in the morning and then think about my assignments throughout the workday. In the evenings, I work on fleshing out my ideas for the assignments. As long as I am diligent to work on a little bit at a time, I find I can meet the needs of my other commitments as well.

What is the biggest difference you've seen in your work so far?

Confidence. When I first started this program, the ability to design eye-catching posters and Web sites was out of my grasp. Now, I can take any image in my mind and replicate it digitally. With each accomplished design project, the way I see myself continues to be bolstered. I feel comfortable that I can produce quality designs for people now.

Describe your goal on graduating from the program.

I would like to move to a different part of the United States. I'm not sure yet whether I will be freelance designer or work full time for a company—it will depend on my circumstances. Either way, I want to invest my time into my community and try to make a positive impact in the lives of young men. Being a Web designer will give me the freedom to make this a reality.
