A Message to Students from Boris Margolin
I have always thought of graphic design as a solution to a problem. Whether that problem is how to communicate an idea, or just to increase sales of a product or service, graphic design will play a pivotal role in the solution. Knowing which tool to use in achieving that solution is certainly important, but it's just as important to come up with the solution itself.
That, in my opinion, has always been the role of the graphic designer, to find a visual solution to a problem. Visually communicating ideas and inspiring actions or feelings. Good design can do this and more.
My personal experience has ranged from designing for major corporations to grassroots startups, along with everything in between. Each time I was able to take away something new and apply it to the next project.
The Graphic Design Certificate program at Sessions combines the real world experiences of a variety of designers into courses that give students the opportunity to gain practical design knowledge in tandem with application skills. As a teacher, my goal is to get students to apply themselves visually and creatively. The result of that creativity is most often a memorable and effective design solution.
The field of graphic design has many possible career paths and often these paths cross depending on the project. You can start with designing a logo for a company and then end up doing a full identity suite. After that you may have to create advertisement layouts, product layouts, posters, banners, and so on… all for the same company.
The programs offered at Sessions, along with constructive feedback and advice from instructors, can help students achieve the skill set, knowledge, and confidence to tackle projects of any size. The courses will also allow students to build a strong and varied portfolio that showcases their solutions to real world design challenges.
