TLDR: I’m looking for a UI/UX co-founder or first hire depending on situation; This comes with a steady paycheck but may also be a co-founder equity and status position in an interesting model of building our own products plus building complex web based applications for our partners.
I’ve been able to get things to where I bring in sufficient revenue to provide a comfortable living for my family (I’m sole provider for a family of 6) as well as make enough to now bring on a partner. So, I’m now looking to find that ideal partner that compliments my skillsets. I’m a solid mix of technology and business. I’ve developed all the projects almost all on my own. I’m ok at marketing, but definitely need to improve in that area.
But there is just 1 thing really holding me back from taking things to the next level. I cannot design and implement a UI/UX that can stand out amongst the crowd. To this point I’ve gotten by with freelance designers, but it’s now time to bring that in-house to take things to the next level. That’s where I hope you come in. I’m looking for that complimentary piece. But I’m not just looking for a UI/UX designer, I’m looking for a true co-founder/partner. Someone who wants to build a company that will become his/her identity & brand for years to come. I have big plans to build something truly special, but that doesn’t blind me from what needs to be done today to move things forward.
I’ve bootstrapped everything to this point with my own funds and own 100% of it, which means I’m in a pretty unique situation where I can offer you not only a steady paycheck each month, but also be able to offer co-founder status AND co-founder equity as well if the situation fits. I haven’t seen opportunities like this very often, so if you think you’d be the right fit, I’d encourage you to just take a chance on me and reach out.
A plus would be a desire to get involved with the marketing (writing content) and/or other aspects of the company.
What we will be doing together: Over the last few years, I’ve been busy building a web platform that incorporates all the common features needed to build complex web applications. At its core, it could be considered similar to a MeteorJS like implementation, but that is tailored towards the types of applications I build with it: B2B, Data Heavy, SAAS-like applications. It’s sweet spot is integrating 3rd party APIs and data and bring it all together into a common platform to then build applications, reporting systems, analytics platforms on top of all that data.My business model is building and maintaining custom applications for partners, as well as launching our own products. I have a mix of recurring product revenue plus on-going development services revenue.
I call it a Product Studio approach. The products we build on our own will be grown to a state of proven market fit, then either sold, or spun out as their own company depending on the situation. So far, I’ve built a custom ERP for the Oil & Gas industry, applications to analyze complex financial models, a custom Pipeline Management system for a VC firm; a marketing platform for multi-location businesses.
I’ve also launched my own competitive intelligence product.
All of these applications are built on the same underlying platform.
I haven’t lost a client yet since I’ve been doing this, but all of these products could be drastically better with some help from a solid UI/UX partner. I’m just now starting to expand into more clients as the platform has now been proven to work and is in production with multiple partners (I don’t even have a company website up yet, so plenty of easy opportunities to attract new business).
More about me: I’m currently an EIR at a top tier late stage VC firm while working on this company (which is a bit ironic since I have no current plans to raise VC money any time soon). Through that relationship I’ve been able to build a pretty solid network that I am just now starting to tap into for expanding into new business. Prior to that, I was CEO of a $12M healthcare technology & publishing company. After merging that company into a bigger one, I took on a VP of Strategic Development role for a short period. I cut my teeth in software building very popular multiplayer casual games for interactive television, phones, and internet. I graduated with a bachelors, Master in Computer Science, and MBA all without going into any debt?—?something I’m very proud of. I love sports and still play basketball 3 times a week. My family is what motivates me to succeed (wife + 4 kids).
I feel I have a good balance of ambition, but unwillingness to risk it all to become successful, so have found this model to be a great mix of security plus still have significant upside potential.OK, that’s my pitch to you. I really do want to speak with you and learn about your life and career goals. If they line up with what I’ve presented, just take a moment and fill out a few questions and I will be in touch. Thanks!

(San Francisco, CA) We are looking for a designer who wants to solve meaningful problems and create beautiful, functional, and persuasive interfaces and identities for websites, applications, and whatever is coming next. This is a learning environment. You will learn how to be a better designer, sell your work to a client, and how to take and give feedback. In addition to working collaboratively with a team to solve problems and solve them well, you also need to be able to stand tall in front of a skeptical crowd and convince them that your solution is the best solution for them. You must be adept at client services. Your blood should boil with the urgency to get shit done and sell good design to people. You should excel at generating your own ideas, and not be upset about being asked to flesh out someone else’s ideas.
You gotta love the web.
We are a small shop and everyone who works here has to be at the top of their game.

a powerful intellectual curiosity

verbal communication and reasoning skills, including the ability to make a business case for design
a year or three working a crap job in the restaurant industry
Write a short email convincing us why we should talk to you. Be persuasive. Don't be cute. E-mails with attachments get auto-filtered to the trash. This is a permanent, full-time job beginning as soon as we find the right person. You will work on-site in San Francisco.

(Phoenix, AZ Scottsdale, AZ Tempe, AZ Mesa, AZ Glendale, AZ Chandler, AZ Gilbert, AZ) Description: We are looking for a creative genius to join our team at SpyFu. You will be designing and building the user experience for SpyFu.com. A passionate audience relies on us to help solve their Search Engine Marketing problems. Your job will be to design and build a user interface for them that makes petabyte-scale data as clear as possible. Often times, we have to think way outside the box and create new visualizations from scratch (see SpyFu Kombat or Ad History). But, ultimately, it's about taking lots of information and making it clean, snappy, and actionable for our customers.
Required: · 2+ years experience. · HTML5, CSS3 · Web design experience + a strong portfolio. · Really good problem solving skills. · Drive to “get things done”. SpyFu is a small company, you’ll be required to wear many hats. The management is also pretty loose, so you’ll need to be able to keep yourself on task and make decisions that you wouldn’t have to in a big company. ** This is a the toughest thing for us to measure, so if you can think of a way to show us this side of your character, please go out of your way to do it.
You can go to SpyFu.com and type in any domain name and see every keyword they buy on Google Adwords, every keyword they rank on organically, and how their ad copy and search rankings have evolved over the last 7 years. On top of that, our goal is to tell people not just what is going on but how to act. So, we need to figure out which keywords, ads, and content are actually profitable – and then show that information to our customers in a context that allows them to take action.
It’s a fun challenge, and we are the best in the world at what we do. Based in the Scottsdale Airpark, SpyFu was launched in 2006 and is a self-funded, profitable and growing SaaS/subscription company.
If you get the job, you’d be the 14th full time employee (not including the founder). But, that doesn’t mean we expect you to give up benefits: · We offer health benefits through your choice of providers. · Retirement Plan (401k) with 4% matching. · You get an office – with a door. · Food and beverages are provided. (pretty much name it and it will magically appear) · We have a commercial-grade automatic espresso machine. · Lots of Toys: From electric drift trikes (Google it) to Xbox One, we’ve got the toys. · We have a keg – actually two kegs. Right now, one of them is a homebrew by one of our developers (called SpyBrew White IPA), and the other is a Dos XX Amber. · We play ping pong – a *lot*. We even have a ping pong robot. Oh, yeah, and there’s a ping pong instructor that comes in to give lessons every Friday. · Foosball is kind of the new ping pong for us. There’s at least 3 games a day these days. · There’s a rock climbing wall. Seriously. · We also have a boxing and MMA trainer come in twice a week. · Oh, and there’s a masseuse every week. And a hair stylist once a month. Yep…
Equity / Options: Ask about that at the interview, but rest assured there’s a nice upside.
Partner: At SpyFu you have the chance to make partner. What that means, is that when you work on a product, and that product is successful, we’ll share its profits with you – as a direct percent. So, the more successful the product is, the more your paycheck goes up every month. So, for example, one of our developers gets a couple percent of SpyFu’s revenue because he’s written a decent amount of the code. When we launched SpyFu, that accounted for a very small percent of his salary, now it accounts for a very large part of it.
This is a pretty unique compensation option. We’ve never heard of anyone doing it before, but it’s pretty awesome and really connects you to the work you do. The latest release had a higher conversion rate? You paycheck goes up this month.
At SpyFu, we understand that our people are what make us awesome, and we invest in getting the right people on our team and keeping them around once they’re on board. You might be waiting for the shoe to drop. We’ve had people tell us that the job sounds too good to be real, and they almost wrote it off as SPAM. The truth is, this IS in many ways the perfect job. It is real.
We are real.
But, to get the job you have to be really, really good. The interview process is the toughest in the valley. But, the cool thing is that once you make it, you realize that every *single* person you work with also had to pass that bar -- which is *awesome*.
Job Perks: 401k + matching
Office with door
Free food and drinks
Toys: Unicycles to XboxOne
Ping pong -- and a weekly ping pong coach
Rock climbing Wall
Boxing, MMA trainer twice a week
Hair stylist every month
Probably forgot something...
