Theresa Slater

Associate Degree in Graphic Design
My biggest passion is travel. I have lived in Virginia, Kentucky, Utah, Florida, Missouri, Kansas, Michigan, Germany, and Bosnia and traveled to Paris, Italy, Spain and all over the United States. I took up scuba diving with my husband about four years ago and currently travel to destinations where I can dive. I have been painting portraits since high school and continue to do commissioned portraits today.

My Sessions Experience
The best thing about Sessions is the opportunity to build portfolio pieces while doing all your coursework from home. I started out going to a conventional college and got “stuck” when the following semester didn’t offer the classes I needed, at the times I needed them. Sessions online is great for working adults or anyone wanting a high quality online education in the design profession.
I think each course at Sessions is a stepping stone to the next where you build on your knowledge. All of the information that has been learned helps you think like a designer. Design is about choices, intentions, and process. At Sessions you learn the fundamental rules of design so you know when and why to break them, to push boundaries, and create visual impact that is memorable.

“Theresa Slater has a great eye for balance in composition. She seems to know inimically how to place elements, create movement and hierarchy, and use type to great effect. There is a sophistication and confidence in her work that we can sometimes overlook. That’s because sometimes good design is just invisible. We don’t see the hand of the designer, we just see the work. And that is what we find with Theresa.” – Andrew Shalat, Head of Graphic Design
My Next Steps
Originally, I wanted to work for an advertising firm. Now, I am looking into having my own freelance business. It’s a lucrative, creative, and flexible career choice. It also means I can work for a variety of companies, in a wide array of fields. I am also looking into getting a Bachelor degree in Graphic Design.
I think print media is where my skills are the strongest. I understand typographic hierarchy and like to use my own artwork or photography to design the pieces. My favorite field is packaging design. My portfolio is at www.slaterartstudio.com.
