Free Font Friday: Vesterbro
by Margaret Penney | June 9, 2017
A contemporary take on Old Style type, Vesterbro reads as a hybrid Garalde and Scottish typeface. The design centers on the Poster weight with its extreme contrast, tall x-height and short serifs. Visually this style has similarities to Didot, but with a warmer, more organic and less formal presentation.
The other weights in the typeface include light, regular, medium, bold, and extrabold. The Regular weight is also a stand out with a very balanced and calm presentation. Terminals on letters gives the design a calligraphic look too.
Old Style fonts are coming back into style but are being applied within layouts in completely new ways. One can see them in brightly colored clean and minimal layouts as bold headline type or combined with avante-garde illustration styles.
Vesterbro is an excellent example of this new ‘Old Style’ trend. The typeface is not entirely free but has a free trial one can download from their Behance page.
