4 Screencasting Apps for Creatives

by Margaret Penney | October 4, 2017

Creatives need to create short video recordings of their screen from time to time. Screencasting is useful when creating instructional videos for clients, demonstrating a technical process on the computer, and presenting video showcases of new design work. Short videos are also effective as posts to social media like Youtube, Instagram, or Facebook.

Screencasting apps have advanced over recent years and now are very easy to use plus have lots of useful features and integrations with other apps. It’s possible to make and publish fairly high-quality videos in a short amount of time. Here are five of the best screencasting apps out right now.

Loom

Loom is a smart, lean and flexible video creation and sharing app that is entirely free. At their website, they present use cases to inspire and help creatives and marketers and business experts think about how they could use video sharing in their projects. Loom has a lot of integrations with industry leading apps like Dropbox, Salesforce, GitHub, Google Docs, Asana, and Trello. Loom also has neat features like in-line video so you can add video right to a chat bubble or to specific areas in a document as a kind of video response.

Loom’s integration also works seamlessly: to add a video recording to any of the integrated apps, a small Loom icon appears that when clicked allows for instantaneous recording. Loom’s tag line is “faster than typing” and for those who learn the flow of creating short video responses versus text it can provide a more streamlined approach to everyday work processes. Loom is a free one-click install on Google Chrome.

Cloud App

Cloud app is a popular video and image sharing screencasting app. Customers can capture most anything including HD video, audio recordings, still images and animated gifs. The output can be edited with annotations and emojis. Sharing is easy to do, the app has integration with many productivity and project management apps like Trello, Slack, and Google Docs. The app is available by subscription and has a 14-day trial.

Vidyard

Vidyard is a video and business solution all-in-one. The app is designed for larger business entities that want to see how their videos perform using analytics and metrics or for those using video as a sales tool for their business. For small design shops, Vidyard may not be quite as useful, but for creatives who are selling a product, it is a solution worth discovering.

VDSC Video Editor

The VDSC video editor is a good choice for screencasting and also one of the more popular free video editing and creation apps available. VDSC has non-linear video editing, visual and audio effects, blend modes and Instagram-like filters and also video masking.  VDSC also has a video conversion feature and works with most video formats.
